Major Chin Languages Spoken

Chin State is located in the northwestern part of Burma (Myanmar), bordered by Bangladesh and India to the west. The people of the Chin state are made up of many tribes that, though historically related, now speak divergent languages and have different cultural and historical identities.

There are about forty to forty-five dialects of the Chin languages. Of these, the most widely spoken are: Tedim (Zomi) among Northern Chin; Hakha (Laimi) and Falam among Central Chin; and Mindat Cho among Southern Chin. Each dialect is so distinct that people who speak different dialects will not likely understand each other.  While the Chin languages are those spoken primarily by the Chin people, about 80% of Chin refugees in the Seattle area also speak Burmese. There are also many different accents among the same dialects. Many Chin people, especially students, also speak Burmese since it is the primary official language in Myanmar and it is taught in school.
